The then federal government under the Local Government Reforms system in the year 2000, eliminated the previous “third tier of governance” (districts in Karachi) and replaced it with adding a fourth tier (Towns) in Karachi. The effect in Karachi was the dissolution of the former Karachi division and the merging of its five districts to form a new Karachi City-Government with 18 autonomous constituent towns including Malir Town. The Malir District was abolished as part of the Local Government Ordinance, 2001, and divided into three towns, namely Malir Town, Bin Qasim Town, and Gadap Town. In 2011, the system was disbanded but remained in place for bureaucratic administration until 2015, when the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation system was reintroduced. In July 2011, Sindh Government reinstated Malir District again, while the Town system disbanded. In 2015, Malir was re-organized and made a part of the Malir District.

Administratively district Malir was divided into 6 subdivisions (talukas), namely Malir, Gadap, Bin Qasim, Ibrahim Hyderi, Murad Memon, and Shah Mureed but in the recent changes in the Local Election Act -2022 (amended) some changes are taken place and in Malir 2 additional Towns namely are established, that includes.
